Clarify what the client means by one section
A hero section can mean a visual concept, a production-ready responsive design, a coded component, or a conversion test with several variants. Those are different deliverables.
Confirm whether the client supplies final copy, brand assets, photography, illustration, and product screenshots. Ask whether the work includes mobile and tablet layouts, animation, prototyping, development, accessibility, analytics, or testing.
Estimate the work behind the visible frame
Break the job into phases before choosing a price:
- Brief review, goal, audience, and call-to-action
- Competitor references and content hierarchy
- Layout exploration and visual direction
- Image, icon, or product-visual preparation
- Desktop, tablet, and mobile decisions
- Interaction or animation notes
- Client presentation and revision rounds
- Final file organisation and developer handoff
If the direction is unclear, sell a paid concept phase instead of promising unlimited exploration inside one fixed fee.
Calculate a sustainable design-only quote
Use your internal hourly floor to protect the minimum, then add overhead, revision risk, profit, and payment fees. The client can still receive one clear project price.
Hourly floor: USD 40 Estimated work: 10 hours Overhead: 10% Revision / direction risk: 12% Target profit: 25% Payment fee: 3.5% Suggested design-only quote: approximately USD 674
This is a worked example, not a universal market rate. Replace the hours and percentages with evidence from your own process, costs, experience, demand, client, and location.
Separate design, development, and conversion work
State whether the quote covers a design file only, a coded responsive section, or a complete landing page. Development may add component behaviour, browser testing, content integration, performance work, analytics, and deployment.
Conversion research, copywriting, user testing, and A/B variants are also separate responsibilities. Include them only when the scope, decision-maker, success measure, and additional workload are clear.
Offer three clear options
Options let the client change scope without discounting the same work.
Essential - approximately USD 607 One desktop hero concept Client supplies final copy and assets One consolidated revision round Recommended - approximately USD 674 Desktop and mobile hero design Content-hierarchy support Two consolidated revision rounds Organised developer handoff Premium - approximately USD 843 Everything in Recommended Additional conversion-focused variant Interaction or animation notes Priority turnaround
Make each option materially different. If coding is included, calculate and list the development workload instead of hiding it inside the design fee.
Write the approval and change rules
Define the included devices, concepts, revision rounds, file formats, handoff detail, feedback deadline, and one approval contact. State whether stock assets, fonts, illustration, copywriting, development, and ongoing optimisation are excluded.
New direction after approval should trigger a revised fee and timeline before more work begins. Show the booking deposit, balance date, quote expiry, and delivery condition.
Common questions
Is there a standard price for one hero section?
No. The visible section does not reveal the strategy, copy work, visual exploration, responsive states, assets, interaction, revisions, development, experience level, or deadline. Price a defined process and deliverable.
Should mobile design cost extra?
Include mobile when it is part of the agreed responsive deliverable and estimate the additional decisions and revision work. Do not imply that a desktop frame automatically includes every breakpoint.
Should I charge separately for development?
Yes when development is a separate workload or responsibility. Define the stack, responsive behaviour, content integration, browser support, testing, analytics, deployment, and post-launch support before pricing it.
What if the client wants several hero concepts?
Set the number of initial concepts and revision rounds in the quote. Additional directions or a change after approval should use a clear add-on or change-order process.
